What is the difference between desegregation and integration?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A question asked to a panel at a symposium on local Black history I was fortunate to attend at Northwestern University.
The question came during a larger discussion about achieving excellence in education and the impact of integration on Black student achievement.
Members of the panel gave a decent response, but it provoked a requirement for deeper analysis that could not be captured in a short period of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the session ended, I approached the sister who asked the question \u2014 the wife of a fraternity brother and a brilliant scientist \u2014 with an answer I had formulated as I sat listening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I told her this:
Desegregation was supposed to benefit Black people. Integration benefited white people, often at Black people\u2019s expense.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s be clear:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Desegregation<\/strong> is the legal ending of racial separation.
It\u2019s about taking down the \u201cWhites Only\u201d signs, unlocking doors that had been barred shut, and saying, \u201cyou\u2019re allowed to be here now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It removes formal barriers \u2014 laws, policies, ordinances \u2014 that kept us out.
But removal of a barrier doesn’t mean you\u2019re welcomed across the threshold.
It just means you can\u2019t be legally stopped anymore.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Integration<\/strong>, on the other hand, is something deeper.
It\u2019s the active creation of inclusive environments where all people not only share space but are empowered, respected, and valued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s not just letting you in the room.
It\u2019s giving you a seat at the table, hearing your voice, honoring your presence, and making sure the table doesn’t look like the same old table built by and for white folks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If desegregation is unlocking the door<\/strong>,
integration is inviting you to live fully in the house and influence how it is run.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The difference matters. A lot.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because America, for the most part, stopped at desegregation.
They tore down the signs.
They sent a few Black children into hostile white schools.
They claimed victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the work of real integration \u2014 building new structures that valued Black excellence, that protected Black children, that shared power and leadership \u2014 was rarely done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, many Black institutions \u2014 schools, businesses, communities \u2014 were weakened or outright destroyed<\/strong> in the name of “progress.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
