Yesterday Juneteenth was celebrated as a national holiday. I’ve been contemplating this question – What did the formerly enslaved Black people do on the 20th that was different than day before? Let’s examine some of things they damn sure couldn’t do:
- Leave
- Look white people in the eye
- Vote
- Pool their resources
- Ignore white peoples demands
- Be recognized as human
- Be recognized as equal
- Demand respect
- Stop working for their former enslavers
This by no means is an exhaustive list! Now if you look at it from the white perspective, they only lost one thing, their net worth decreased because freedom meant the loss of property.
So, Juneteenth is recognized as a national holiday at the same time many politicians and states are passing laws that ban the books that teach the true history, suppress voting, and affirmative action…all while we get ready for the 4th of July!
