2023

I’ve done resolutions and think for the most part, if it was a statistic like baseball batting average, I’d be somewhere in the .450 – .500 range. If it was baseball, I’d be in the Hall of Fame. But this is life and resolutions are promises to yourself to be a better version of you in the new year. When we make these annual commitments to ourselves, who are accountable to? We get to determine when they start, if there is a target or expiration, timeline (other than before 2024), and how many mulligans we get to take.

In 2022, I wrote 22 Intentions, they weren’t published because Intention #9 was launch A Black Man’s Writes. I haven’t decided whether to publish this years list for two reasons 1) It’s not done and 2) the personal and private things on 22 making me ask how public exposure would influence how I go about accomplishing them, and more honestly, could I handle the scrutiny of public opinion. So you may see a redacted version in the next few days.

I will tell you that my “theme” for ’23 is ” Thoughts Become Things”. It was one of the last things I heard last night, I have to give credit to Ryan Chiaverini on ABC for saying it and myself for hearing it even though I was distracted by his Windy City Live co-host Val Warner (my not so secret crush).

I woke up this morning, thinking ironically, what things can I make with my thoughts? Do I now have some magical power that will turn my intentions into things. And how is it different from the tried and true – “speaking it into existence” or any other method of positive thinking manifesting into your hopes and desires?

I’m wrestling with it, it can’t be a three wishes, or in this case, 23 wishes thing. If that were the case, my intentions list would probably be WAY different. At this point, I’m pretty sure the thoughts need to be probable, possible, and personal. This is fluid so I’ll keep you posted. My #1 Intention, maybe you can guess is to write more.

Happy New Year!
